Tagalog Words
Posted on September 1, 2008

It’s been  a few months now that I’ve been teaching my daughter, Casey a "Tagalog" words. I finally made a firm decision to teach her tagalog language. I would like her to know the national language of Philippines, the "Tagalog". As much as I would like her to learn my own native tongue, the "waray-waray" language but I was thinking it would be better if she learned "Tagalog" than "waray-waray". Although, she learned some of "Waray-waray" words.

One thing that made me decide to teach her is, when I tried one time to teach her a few words, like I begin using the “buhok” in English is hair. I was combing her hair; it just popped in my mind telling her, hair is buhok in tagalog. I mentioned it to her once and I forgot about it that I once mentioned it to her.

Two weeks later, I heard it from her using the word "buhok". I asked her what is buhok? she answered me at once "hair!". I was surprised she still remember it. Her memory is amazing. She has very good memory. And now I have convinced myself that it is not too late to teach her Tagalog. And also, my family in Philippines kept convincing me to teach her Tagalog.

The older she gets the more I was feeling guilty for not trying to teach her.

So far, Here are the Tagalog words Casey knows.

1. Mata-Eyes

2. Tuhod-Knees

3. Paa-Feet/toes

4. Balikat-Shoulder

5. Ulo-Head

6. Noo-Forehead

7. Buhok-Hair

8. Suklay-Comb

9. Tinapay-Bread

10. Kain or kain na- Eat

11. Basura-Garbage

12. Sige na- Come on

13. Salamat-Thank you

14. Walang anuman-You’re welcome

15. Maganda- beautiful

16. Guwapo-handsome

17. Ilong-Nose

18. Upo-sit-down

19. Tayo-Stand-up

20. Mansanas-Apple

21. Ubas-Grapes

22. Takbo- Run

23. Saging-Bananas

24. Tubig-Water

25. Inom-Drink

26. Palo-Spank

27.Ngipin-Teeth

28. Dila-Tongue

29. Puwit-Butt

30. Tenga-Ear

31. Laruan-Toys

32. Sabon- Soap

33. Kamay- Hands

It’s so funny, Casey knows the word guwapo, but she really didn’t know exactly what is meant by guwapo. In English it is handsome. Casey use to hear me all the time guwapo referring it to her daddy and last night I was reviewing her "Tagalog" words, I asked her what is guwapo and she said “daddy!”. I told her right, guwapo is handsome. Is daddy’s handsome? She said yes! Daddy is guwapo. LOL

The more Casey learned "Tagalog" words; the more I get excited to teach her more. I'm glad she was learning in spite that she has a hard time pronouncing it.  She has the English accent But it doesn't matter. The important right now is, she can able to comprehend my words. About the pronunciation, I believe she'll figure it out.

Don't get rid my stuff, Mommy!
Posted on September 3, 2008

One day, I was cleaning Casey's room and saw some of her toys, she didn't play much.  I told her I am going to donate to goodwill her toys especially the musical toys and clothes that didn't fit to her anymore. She was okay with that and I am glad that it's not that hard to explain it to her.

When I was trying to load the stuff to the truck, Casey saw her keyboard instruments, she didn't want me to get rid of them. I guess she wasn't ready for this especially to her any musical instruments she has. This is the stuff that I wanted to get rid of, it's so noisy, the pitch didn't sound well to my ear...arrgh!

It came to the point Chris and I have to hide it from her or put in a place where she can't reach it. We're so mean!

We unloaded the stuff including her keyboard, she was sad and she said bye bye keyboard and then I was feeling very guilty about it.

I explained it to her and then she said, okay with sad voice. Every time Casey saw the goodwill trailer, she'll say, Mommy gave my keyboard to goodwill. Chris and I stare at each other...feeling guilty. That was last year.

And now just this year, I get rid her wiggles guitar.  And this time I didn't ask her permission. She wasn't using it anyway. It takes lot of space in to her toy box.

She didn't notice it until she was watching Barbie and the Barbie was playing guitar and she run right away to her room and looking for her guitar. Oh oh, I'll be in trouble to my daughter. She asked me where's my guitar I said I get rid of it and I said sorry to her. Every day she keeps bugging me for her guitar.

To make it up to her, we went to thrift store to see if there's guitar for Casey. Chris and I can't find guitar but Casey did. It's Hanna Montana guitar and of course it's a musical guitar that needs battery. Casey loves to sing, loves to play musical instruments.  And now she has her new favorite musical instruments, the Hanna Montana guitar.

Casey has no problem getting rid of her stuff unless it is her musical instruments. Just liked her rocking chair we got from Michelle. She's not using this stuff, thought to give it to goodwill. I asked her and explaining her, she's now a big girl and this rocking chair is getting small for her. And I told her, there's a baby out there might use it. She said okay and she went to her room and brought skirt. She said, it is not fit to her, she want to give it to baby. I said Okay!

I learned a lesson not to get rid of her stuff especially WITHOUT her permission. I admit I was wrong. It's her stuff and I have to respect it. I still have to learn more!

Cinderella Girl
Posted on September 4, 2008

Here's my Cinderella girl. She loves being Cinderella and imitates her all the time. She was sings, mops the floor, dusts the drapes and wears an apron like Cinderella. She must have apron because Cinderella wears an apron in the movie! She even pretends that she is fixing tea for us. She was calling me fairy godmother and she called her daddy a prince! Oh well, part of her growing up I guess!

What is a true friend to you?
Posted on September 5, 2008

What is a friend to me and what friends are for? God knows how eager I am to meet new friends especially Filipina. My first /second year here, I didn’t have any friends. I was longing for it. I prayed constantly for it until one day I met Marie. She was the first Filipina I met. I was feeling very ecstatic when we decided to meet in person. I was nervous and happy for our upcoming meeting. I was a bit worried because it seems like the weather is not going to cooperate but I was wrong.

Our first meeting was at Kmart. My first time of meeting Marie was awesome. She is the answers to my prayers. We exchange numbers and that was how it started. And then in the following weeks, I met Maricel and her husband Bill.

The meeting with them was great, everything was great. I believe they are the answers to my prayers. And now I have a bunch of them. I am really grateful.

What is a true friend anyway? John 15: 13 is the perfect meaning of a true friend. It says, greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friend. I’m not expecting from my friends to do this for me. (LOL) Literally interpretations of this verse seems kind of difficult but with love we can do everything I think.

Who is willing to lay his life for a friend, or should I say what you can do for your friend? Are you willing to lend your ear for a friend? Or are you willing to lend your time for a friend without expecting anything in return from them. In my own version, a true friend are the ones that I can trust, a friend who is constantly there for you, no matter what happens, they are just there for you through thick & thin. A friend who is true to you and accept you the way you are.

Not the kind of person who brags about her $350 bag and tells me I cannot afford to buy it, oh yeah, I know that but you don’t have to tell me that! Honestly, if I have that money, I won’t waste the $350 for a bag. Certainly not that kind of friend I want to keep or worse than that a friend who stabs you in the back. This is not the kind of friend worthy of being cherished.

I like a kind of friend who tells me what is true and what is not, no pretentious! A friend has the guts to tell me I am wrong if I made a mistake rather than compromising. A friend who is willing to lend a helping hand, lending their ears for you.

Anyway, I don’t care what you are and who you are whether you’re beautiful or ugly, black or white, tall or short, rich or poor, famous or unpopular, smart or not, whatever friend is friend to me. I’ll treat you the same way I treat my other friends. That is what it is all about. There’s an adage, a friend for a reason, a season or a lifetime? Let me end this with this question. Are Your Friends Here for a Reason, A Season, or a Lifetime? or Are you a friend for a reason, a season or a lifetime?

The Center Of Everything
Posted on September 11, 2008

I’ve been reading this novel at night. I got this novel from the library so no time for my procrastination attitude about reading this. I have to determine to read this before the due date, just so I can borrow more. Although I can extend the book online but really don’t want to do it.

I’m so glad I am through reading this, ”The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty”. This novel is well written and heartwarming. This is about the 10 year old girl that lives in Kansas, named Evelyn Bucknow. She is hardworking, studious, smart girl. She thinks Kansas is at the center of everything.

Evelyn is the daughter out of wedlock. Her father ran off before she was born and her mother is trying desperately to hold their lives together but she has a lot of pride that brings her into trouble. Things get more complicated when Evelyn's mother loses her job and car, and then, déjà vu, bring another child into this world. She got pregnant again certainly, the mother is not thinking right especially she is unable to hold her own life together. But she loves her children in anyway. Evelyn’s grandmother loves her so dearly and helps her and teaches good things.

I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and I believe this is worth reading. I recommend this book especially for the teens. This book will give a lot of lessons in reality. Now days a lot of mothers they give up easily and they turn in their child to foster care/adoption or worse, they have an abortion.

I think abortion is not right thing to do and to give up your child in any circumstances unless you’re dying. Being poor is not really the issue here, certainly not the reason to give up. This novel is very uplifting. You’ll see the saddest and the happiest moments. “This Center of Everything” is not a waste of time to read.

Meet Casey's New Friend
Posted on September 13 2008

This is Casey and her new buddy, Raven. I'm glad Casey has a friend now that close to where we live. Actually her grandfather and grandmother are in the same building where we are. So we're neighbors.

I'm so glad Raven is now lives with her grandma and her mother and Casey met Raven and they seems they both get a long just fine. She invited Casey to her 8th birthday today and of course we had wonderful time on her birthday and we got chance to meet the rest of her family too.

It's really awesome to have lots of friends...Click the images to view larger. Thanks!

Free Footprints for Toddlers
Posted on September 14 2008

We were off to ‘Color Me Mine’ today. We made a reservation for Casey 4 days ago. Due to their limited space, they highly recommend reservations so, we signed up for 12 noon. We got there at the right time 11:50am.

This is free event each child got to stamp their footprints onto an 8" plate. At first Casey got her name tag and then one of their staff did the stamping of Casey’s footprint. I thought its Casey will be the one that will do the embellishments on the plate and we’ll just watch her but its parent’s participation. While the parents do the embellishments, the color-me-mine staff will entertain the kids.

Doing the painting is a lot of fun, but frankly we’re not into this and neither of Chris or I are into art. Anyway, this is completely free and have 1 hour to be away from home. Casey had fun and of course she made a big mess of the paint even though she got pink balloon in which she had been waiting for. This is our first time to be in the ‘Color Me Mine’ store, seems neat and fun!

Needle versus Band-aid
Posted on September 15 2008

Casey had an appointment last Friday for TB test, one of the requirements for her to get into pre-school. When we got to the doctor's office, the nurse showed to Casey the needle but it seemed like it didn’t bother her at all. The moment the nurse stick the needle on Casey's left arm, Casey didn't even cry. She just said, hurts but she's sit still. Casey's not afraid to the needle but she's terrified of band-aids. It's hard for us to put band-aid on her. I'd rather go with the band-aid than needle.J

Just like last week, she and her daddy went out to get the mail and she was running and she fell down and got boo-boo. I am trying to put band-aid on but she didn't let us. We'll just have to do the trick. Actually Casey loves band-aid; she wears it like bracelet tattoo especially if you have that kind of band-aid that has design like Ariel, hello kitty or Dora. She loves character band-aid. For Casey, it's her tattoo.

Oh just dawned on me on our trip to Philippines, I put like 4 character band-aid on her and when we landed to Manila and my sisters saw all the band-aids, they got terrified, when the moment they saw all the band-aids on Casey and they asked, what happened to Casey? I told them, oh Casey is fine and it just her tattoo. It's Casey's fashion accessories. The problem is with this character band- aid, it's hard to come off especially when it stays too long and it hurts her when we tried to take the band-aid off. Since then she didn't like the band-aid anymore. Some of the band-aids with the design are easy to come off though, but the last she had was hard to come off and I'm kind of upset because it leave marks on Casey's skin.

One thing that I hated is to see any marks on Casey's skin. Anyway Casey loves going to the doctor. She’s always excited if we tell her, she's going to see the doctor. She's happy because she's going to see her friend doctor Walsh. We’re glad that we don't have problem when it comes to this. I hear some parents that their kids scared to see the doctor. I'm glad Casey loves to see Doctor but the problem here is, when she just coughs or cold, she wants to see Doctor right away.

Hopefully Casey will be back to pre-school again soon. She’s excited about it. We just need the paperwork done etc.

Back To School
Posted on September 17 2008

Casey goes back to school again. She started today. The school starts at 8:15 and ends 11:15 Monday to Friday. Casey was very excited, she was feeling nostalgic. She had her backpack ready last night as her usual routine back when she was in school. And she was saying she’s going to put her jacket and her backpack in the cubby and meet her Ma’am Mia. We told her, this is different school she is going to. So, she won’t be able to see her Ma’am Mia.

This time, Casey will be at Riverview Elementary School right here in Rancho Cordova. It took 5 minutes drive to get there. We told Casey she'll be going to the same school where Raven (a neighbor) goes. Mentioning Raven’s name gladdens her.

We’re so happy that Casey is back to school again, we know she loves going to school. And now that she’s back to school, she must get up early again for school and that means I too must get up early as well. And I have 2 days or more per month to volunteer at the River view school. I guess my soap opera can wait until after Casey’s school.J

Potluck: Hosted by Rodney & Ena
Posted on September 22 2008

Yahoo! summer is over. Autumn is here. I love autumn because I enjoy seeing the leaves changing into golden colors and falling on to the ground. And pretty soon the weather will be cold, wind will be breezy, and leaves everywhere. The trees will be more scenic. I love it! Anyway, we were off to the Sacramento aquatic center for our monthly potluck gatherings, hosted by Rodney & Ena.

The September potluck was different than the previous potlucks we had. This is not just all about food/eats but I'd say a bit adventurous. The host of this months potluck encouraged the couples to join them and try kayaking. Rodney & Ena were kind enough to give each couples the opportunity to do an hour free kayaking. I'd say this was a really awesome idea. I know I was screaming a lot during the kayaking but I had fun. I won't forget this event. This means a lot to me. I couldn't believe I had the courage to try this, knowing that I don't know how to swim. To be honest this scares me to death! Chris moves a lot that made me scared more and scream.

Thank you Rodney & Ena for giving us this great opportunity to try the kayaking. You guys are awesome. But I'm not sure if I'll do it again. Once is enough I guess. I had so much fun and at the same time scared...hey we made it!
I'll post the picture of Chris and I do kayaking, as soon as Ena send us the copy. To the newly couple, Nice meeting you! We hope to see you guys on our next potluck! View photos

Ladies Trip To San Francisco
Posted on September 28 2008

The ladies were off to San Francisco yesterday. We talked about this at our last potluck. I was hesitant to go because Casey has fever for 2 days before the ladies day Trip to SF. But on Friday she didn’t have fever and we let her go to school since she missed 2 days of school. She was cooperating and that made me decide that I’m going to San Francisco with the ladies. I was thinking this might be my chance to go out and enjoy with just the ladies while Chris is not working yet, so I have to take advantage of this.

We got to San Francisco about noon. First we went to Daly City to drop off Loida’s parents. Daly City is one of only a few major-Asian cities in the continental United States. The city is known for its large Filipino American with a population of 103,621 (as of 2000). I didn’t know this until Loida told us about it. She used to live there and according to her, you didn’t have to have a car to get to the places she wanted. My eyes were busy watching the city and I agreed with loida. The stores are just close to each other and the Bart station is close by for walking to. Anyway, we went to Bart to wait for Niah. Her husband, Peter, dropped her off of Bart just so she can join us. She made it from Colorado to here to celebrate our Freedom (Ladies-day off)

Everyone got hungry and dying to eat rice (Lol) So, to make sure there is rice, we decided to go to Jollibee! Jollibee is a fast-food restaurant chain based in the Philippines. It is an American-style fast-food restaurant with Filipino-influenced dishes specializing in burgers, spaghetti, chicken and some local Filipino dishes. I enjoy Jollibee more than Mc Donald. Their chicken is “Finger lickin’ good”. We had rice, a bucket of chicken, palabok, peach-mango pie...hmm. yum-o!

And now that we satisfied our tummy's cravings, we’re on our way to Loida’s itinerary plans. There were a few places we went to- amongst those was the golden gate, Lombard Street. I’ve been wanting to see Lombard and am so glad Loida included Lombard in her itinerary. Lombard Street is best known for the one way section on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, in which the roadway has eight sharp turns (or switchbacks) that have earned the street the distinction of being "the crookedest (most winding) street in world. Yes we drove to Lombard street, the part that is very steep road and thought I’m going to have heart attack! Everyone was screaming. And Loida mentioned it was her first time to drive Lombard Street. We'd rather that we didn't want to know that, to keep us calm and relax :)

We went to Coit Tower, Marine Vista point and the last one was the Ghirardelli square. This is the only place I requested Loida to bring me. I like Ghirardelli and really wanted to visit the store. Ghirardelli Square is a tourist attraction with shops and restaurants in the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco, California. When you get into the store, they give you a sample of chocolate and we savor every taste of Ghirardelli chocolate.

We had so much fun, I feel like teenager. The loud music, the laughing, dancing, screaming, waving at people (men), it seemed liked we own the city. I'm assuming people think we're drunk, but we're not. Nobody's drinking, this is just pure fun. We just enjoying to the max, like there no tomorrow. We were enjoying our day-off as maid? Is that what you call it ladies? LOL

We had dinner at Cafe Eight after looking around which restaurant we want. Some restaurant’s we went to, need reservations and some we have to wait 2 hours. We really didn't want to wait that long. The time is running so fast. At that time it was 10pm. Time flies really when you are having fun. At Cafe Eight, I had a bowl of clam chowder soup and hot chocolate. I was cold and thought soup is a good remedy. It helped though. This is my first time to have clam chowder. and they seemed surprise when I told them. According to them, clam chowder is an American favorite soup and I didn't know that. The clam chowder at Cafe Eight is good but a bit salty for me, but their mocha is really so good!

We feel a bit exhausted after Ghirardelli and decided to go home but we have to go Hayward to drop off Niah and then we headed to Sacramento. Thank you Violet for bringing me home. When I got home, my clock says it is 2:07am. I didn’t expect to be home at 2am, my expectation was to be home by 9pm, at the latest. Anyway, I had so much fun. And now this morning my daughter Casey told me, she won't let me go without her and her daddy. Oh uh, am I in trouble? Thank you Ladies! And ladies, don’t forget, what happened in SF, stays in SF.
